Dana White Explains Why Georges St-Pierre Will Be ‘Out For Minute’
Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre returned earlier this month after a nearly four-year hiatus to win the middleweight title with a submission victory in the third round over Michael Bisping at UFC 217. The win made St-Pierre just the fourth fighter in UFC history to win titles in two divisions. He now joins Randy Couture, B.J. Penn, and Conor McGregor.
It appears plans for St-Pierre’s next fight are on hold as the current UFC middleweight champion is suffering from colitis and will be out of action indefinitely, according to UFC President Dana White.
The UFC boss revealed this information during a media scrum with reporters following Friday’s TUF 26 Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“They called me yesterday, and I think it’s out that he has colitis,” White told MMAjunkie. “So he’s out for a minute.”
By doing a quick Google search and looking at emedicinehealth.com, symptoms of colitis may include: abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea, sometimes with blood in the stool. It should be noted that White did not offer many details about the severity of St-Pierre’s condition or precisely how long he will be out of action.
Going into UFC 217, the big question going around was what GSP would do if he won the title from Bisping. He is used to fighting at welterweight.
Will he stay at middleweight to unify the title with interim champion Robert Whittaker? Or would St-Pierre turn his attention to a potential fight with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley or even lightweight champion Conor McGregor?
White has indicated on several occasions that GSP would fight Whittaker next. Time will tell if he will actually stay at that weight and make his first title defense as middleweight champion.
