Dana White Confirms Cerrone vs Jury Still In The Works

Two weeks ago, a rumor surfaced that undefeated No. 8-ranked UFC lightweight Myles Jury would be facing off with rising No. 4 contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at an upcoming January UFC event.

While nothing official has been set for the potentially exciting bout, it’s apparently not off the table. When questioned about the possibility of the match becoming a reality today, UFC President Dana White responded that it indeed was:

Jury was last seen finishing former Pride FC champion and JMMA legend Takanori Gomi in the first round at September 20’s UFC Fight Night 52 from Saitama, Japan. “Fury” picked apart Diego Sanchez in his previous bout at UFC 172 to run his UFC record to 6-0 since June 2012.

Meanwhile, Cerrone has been on an absolute tear since losing to No. 3-ranked Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 27 in August 2013, winning five straight bouts with four post-fight bonuses. His last win was a three-round decision over former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at September 27’s UFC 178 pay-per-view from Las Vegas.

Cerrone was originally supposed to fight No. 2-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov at the event, and then No. 7-ranked Bobby Green when “The Eagle” was forced out with a knee injury. He capitalized on the opportunity by peppering the smaller Alvarez with some vicious low kicks, but he could have potentially finished the fight in the final round before questionably going to the ground.

Regardless, Cerrone will be in line for a title shot if he defeats Jury, and “Fury” will probably be one of two fights away from one of his own if he adds “Cowboy” to his growing list of victims.

No word has come as to why the two sides have not agreed to the bout; perhaps it rests on a date and location. Stay tuned to LowKick MMA on any developments on the possible upcoming lightweight blockbuster.
