CM Punk Announces UFC Debut In 2015, Plans To Fight At Middleweight

Confirming a set of rumors from earlier this week, retired WWE wrestler Phil “CM Punk” Brooks has officially announced that he will turn to MMA and fight for the UFC in 2015.

Punk appeared alongside UFC octagon announcer Joe Rogan to declare his blockbuster decision, adding that he most likely be fighting at 185 pounds:

“Most likely middleweight. I’m going to do a test weight cut and see how I feel, and the option, I think, for welterweight might be there, but certainly not light heavyweight.”

Brooks famously left the WWE behind earlier this year after having serious creative differences with owner Vince McMahon. With his debut in MMA, his permanent retirement from the WWE is all but sealed up.

But it’s hard to think that the 36-year-old Punk will be a force in the stacked UFC middleweight division. He’s long been a practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Rener Gracie, but he’s going to need a lot more than that to swim with the sharks in the octagon.

Regardless of how he does, Punk’s debut in the octagon will obviously bring a ton of attention to a year that is already shaping up to be one of the biggest in UFC history. Who would be a good opponent for Punk in his UFC debut?
