Chael Sonnen Thinks Jose Aldo Will Lose $3.5 Million If He Pulls Out Of UFC 189
Well, the plot seems to have thickened regarding reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo’s injury saga leading up to the biggest fight of his career, a mega fight with Irish superstar Conor McGregor at UFC 189.
It was shockingly reported earlier this week that Aldo had suffered a fractured rib in training, putting the bout in jeopardy. However, fans were relieved when it was later revealed that “Scarface” had only suffered a bone bruise to his rib and that he still planned on fighting, with former title challenger Chad Mendes being put on standby in case of emergency.
The story has continued this morning, with news breaking that Aldo’s rib is indeed fractured, once again putting the bout at risk. So will the champion show up on fight night? Well it’s hard to say, but one thing is for sure, Aldo definitely doesn’t want to miss out on the biggest payday of his career.
Despite being the only featherweight champion in UFC history, and holding the belt for years now, Aldo has never been the biggest star, but with McGregor on the other side of the cage, this fight has turned into one of the biggest fights in history, and “Scarface” will for sure rack in millions.
Another illustrious figure in mixed martial arts (MMA), “The American Gangster” Chael Sonnen, took to his official Facebook account to speak on the situation, noting that this fight will do over a million buys, which would convert to over three million dollars for Aldo:
“Aldo is in on the PPV. He he gets a cut as long as he meets predetermined thresholds. The bad news for Aldo is that he has never met even the minimum threshold and thus has never gotten to participate in a back end bonus. This fight will generate a million buys which would convert to a bonus of roughly 3.5 million dollars. So, hurt or not — will he make the walk?”
Sonnen continued on saying that it may not be a matter of how tough Aldo is, but rather a decision from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). If the injury is that severe, the NSAC may not let the champion fight. Sonnen closed by saying that whoever leaked the injury may have cost Aldo a boat load of cash:
“When your injury reports surface on the web, it may not be an issue of Aldo being tough and gutting it out, it may be one an issue of the Commision stepping in and saying ‘no go’,” Sonnen wrote. “Whoever within his team leaked the training room information to the media, may have just cost Aldo 3.5 million dollars.”
Will Aldo be able to make it the Octagon on July 11, 2015, or did the featherweight champion lose his chance on a massive payday?
