Cain Velasquez Undergoes Successful Shoulder Surgery, Out 5-6 Months

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez received a bit of a scare when he found out he would need his second shoulder surgery in three years following his one-sided destruction of former champion Junior dos Santos in the main event of October’s UFC 166. It was previously thought that Velasquez had dodged surgery, but ultimately he suffered a partially torn rotator cuff and had to go under the knife.

Ariel Helwani revealed on tonight’s “UFC Tonight” that Velasquez will need extensive rehabilitation and will be out for five to six months. The champion took to his Instagram account earlier today to declare his second surgery a success and express his desire to get back to training soon:

Velasquez has been rumored to face Fabricio Werdum at the UFC’s first-ever show in Mexico. It’s a dream of Velasquez’ that appeared be getting closer and closer to becoming a reality.

But those plans are on hold for an indefinite period of time now.

Werdum was last seen submitting Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 10 in June and has been on the bench ever since. Helwani reported that UFC President Dana White would be talking to Werdum about taking a fight so he doesn’t end up on the sidelines for a year-and-a-half.

It’s a very unfortunate set of circumstances because the fact is Velasquez has looked like an unstoppable force as of late.

Let’s hope that Velasquez’ latest surgery doesn’t effect his fight with Werdum as much as it did his first return bout, a knockout loss to dos Santos at UFC on Fox 1 that still remains his only defeat.

Does Werdum have any chance of dethroning the injured yet bulldozing champion?
