Bigfoot vs. Mir Headlines UFC Fight Night 61 With Teixeira Out

This morning (Wed., January 7, 2015) the UFC injury epidemic let us know it was still here, as a knee injury has forced No. 5-ranked light heavyweight Glover Teixeira out of February 22’s UFC Fight Night 61 main event against Rashad Evans from Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Teixeira reportedly aggravated a previous knee injury suffered during his one-sided loss to Phil Davis at October’s UFC 179.

In the bout’s place steps the already scheduled Frank Mir vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva heavyweight tilt, which was previously scheduled for February 28’s UFC 184 pay-per-view from Los Angeles.

It’s not the first (or even the second) February UFC event that has been affected by injury, as news broke last week that Tarec Saffiedine was forced to withdraw from a headlining bout versus Matt Brown at February 14’s UFC Fight Night 60, and Top 15-ranked middleweight Costas Philippou was out of his fight with Uriah Hall due to a rib injury.

There’s no word as to where Evans will go next, as the decorated but aging former champion has been out of action since destroying Chael Sonnen way back at UFC 167 in November 2013. “Suga” was set to face Daniel Cormier in the co-main event of UFC 170 in February 2014, but a serious knee injury suffered in training has taken the last year of his fighting career.
