Joanne Calderwood Survives Early Scare To Batter Cortney Casey

Back in April 2015, Joanne Calderwood (10-1) suffered the first loss of her career when she was submitted by Maryna Moroz. “JoJo” wanted to get back on track by putting on a stellar performance against Cortney Casey (4-2) in her home country of Scotland at UFC Fight Night 72.

That’s exactly what she did against a game “Cast Iron.”

Calderwood landed a leg kick immediately. Casey stunned Calderwood with combinations to the head. “JoJo” clinched her opponent against the fence. Casey dropped guard and landed elbows with Calderwood on top. She tried going for an armbar off her back, but had trouble executing it. Calderwood connected with an elbow. “Cast Iron” went for a heel hook, but Calderwood defended it. They traded punches on the ground until the first round ended.

Calderwood pushed Casey against the fence and landed knees to the body. “Cast Iron” retaliated with a punch of her own. Calderwood pressured Casey with punches and a spinning kick to the body. She controlled Casey and kneed her in the face twice before dragging her away from the cage and to the canvas. The action returned to the standup and “JoJo” landed a big right hook to the jaw.

Casey withstood the punishment before being taken down. Calderwood stood in control of “Cast Iron.” She landed punches and elbows on the ground. With less than a minute to go in the second round, they stood back up. Calderwood connected with a hook and the round came to a close.

The final round began and both competitors touched gloves. Calderwood pelted Casey with leg kicks and hooks. She went for a spinning elbow against the fence. “JoJo” dropped Casey with a spinning body kick and rained down punches. Calderwood backed off so the fight could return standing. Despite getting hit with everything but the kitchen sink, Casey continued to fight through the pain and exhaustion. Calderwood maintained top control with 30 seconds left in the fight. The bout ended with “JoJo” punching “Cast Iron” on the ground.

Final Result: Joanne Calderwood def. Cortney Casey via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)
