Frankie Edgar Won’t Accept Non-Title Fight After UFC 189

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar recently returned to action in Manila, where he fought off former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber over five rounds. Although ‘The California Kid’ recently stated he thought he’d won a few rounds, ‘The Answer’ was the clear winner on the night. With the win Edgar extended his streak to four at 145 pounds, having won a decision over Charles Oliveira in his first fight at FW, and then finished BJ Penn and Cub Swanson before competing at UFC Fight Night 66 last month.

Talk immediately turned to the title picture, and where exactly Edgar fits in. With Jose Aldo set to face Conor McGregor at UFC 189, things could take a serious shake up at featherweight in the coming months. The advantage Edgar holds in this situation is that he has taken out two of the top contenders in his latest outings, and could make a great case for a title bout against either Aldo or McGregor. His strong wrestling base would make a bout against ‘The Notorious’ very interesting, and his close fight with ‘Scarface’ at UFC 163 is definitely deserving of a rematch.

‘The Answer’ recently said that UFC president Dana White overlooked for him for a title shot in favour of the Irish star McGregor, and it now seems that Edgar’s intentions are clear; title fight, or no fight, as posted by UFC Tonight:

A logical look at the rankings will put to rest any fears of Edgar retiring without fighting again, as the rough and ready New Jersey native doesn’t have much legitimate threats to his contender spot at present. Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas have both lost to Aldo, Mendes twice and Lamas is coming off a loss to ‘Money, Max Holloway isn’t quite there yet, Charles Oliveira needs a few more, Cub Swanson lost to Edgar already, and then you’re only really left with Edgar, Aldo and McGregor.

So in fact, there is really one answer as to who gets the next title shot; Frankie Edgar is going to be waiting for the winner of Jose Aldo vs Conor McGregor at UFC 189.
