Alan Jouban Survives Point Deduction To Defeat Matt Dwyer In San Diego

A welterweight contest between Canadian stalwart Matt Dwyer (8-3) and Alan Jouban (12-3) kicked off the main card of UFC Fight Night 71 on July 15, 2015. Both 170-pound bruisers were looking to capitalize off their first round knockout victories earlier this year.

The combatants met at the center of the Octagon to start things. Fifteen seconds in, Jouban connected with a leg kick. Dwyer had his front kick blocked. “Brahma” went for a haymaker, but Dwyer rocked him with a right hand. Jouban reversed the position and wound up in his opponent’s full guard. They returned to their feet and Dwyer was pushed against the fence. They separated and Jouban clocked the Canadian with a right hand.

Jouban kneed Dwyer in the head while he was down and referee Herb Dean halted the fight and took a point way from Jouban. The action resumed and Jouban cracked Dwyer with a straight right. Dwyer connected with a front kick and Jouban answered with a right hand to the chin as the round came to a close.

Round two began and “Brahma” blocked a high kick and landed a leg kick. Dwyer starched Jouban with a left hook. Dywer kept his distance, but got kicked in the body. Jouban’s head kick was partially blocked. Jouban countered his opponent and landed a left to the head. Dywer ducked under a hook and went for a takedown, but it was stuffed. Jouban pressed Dwyer against the cage and landed an elbow to the top of the head off the break. A head kick dropped Dwyer who was bloodied under his eye. The Canadian threw punches, but Jouban hit him with a left hand. Jouban caught a body kick and nailed Dwyer with a punch to the solar plexes. “Brahma” landed a cartwheel kick to end the round.

The final round saw Jouban stalk down Dwyer early. He landed a leg kick. Jouban ducked a winging right hand and threw a left. Jouban looked to be the fresher fighter of the two, but had trouble reaching Dwyer for a bit. Jouban looked very tentative and commentators Jon Anik and Kenny Florian believed it may have been due to an eye poke. Dwyer threw a head kick that was partially blocked. “Brahma” then ducked under and took down Dwyer.

On his back, Dwyer was searching for a kimura. Jouban swung wild punches on the ground, allowing him to get back to his feet. They exchanged punches and the final horn sounded with Dwyer in Jouban’s guard.

Final Result: Alan Jouban def. Matt Dwyer via unanimous decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-27)
