UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman retained his title last night, in a thriller with former light-heavyweight champion Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida. ‘The All-American’ showed that he can fight through adversity, and also go five rounds with top flight challengers. The win places Weidman on a lot of radars, and UFC president Dana White immediately linked the champ to his former scheduled opponent Vitor Belfort.

‘The Phenom’ himself was quick to jump on the title shot train, as he posted the following to his Instagram account:

Now I want what I deserve, MY TITIE SHOT!!! Don’t run away!! No excuses!! Agora eu quero o q eu mereço, minha luta pelo título! Não fuja!!! Sem desculpas!!! @ufc#govitor #ufc175

Belfort’s issue with the athletic commission after the TRT ban helped put the screws to his title shot at UFC 173, and also to his attempt to fill in for Wanderlei Silva against Chael Sonnen. If he can get straight with the NSAC now, then there really is no reason to deny the Brazilian knockout artist his bid at the strap.

Belfort arguably had the best year in 2013; knocking out Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson in convincing fashion. Although this year has got off to a rough start for the embattled veteran, there could still be light at the end of the tunnel. Do you think ‘The Phenom’ will reach his goal, or will Weidman send him in to retirement?
