UFC Fight Night 50 Prelims Results: Al Iaquinta & John Moraga Finish
The UFC Fight Night 50 prelims are in the books, and it has been a great night so far. The fans in Mashantucket, Connecticut have been treated to an evening of thrilling fights with a mixed bag of finishes. First up to enter the octagon was Sean Soriano, as he took on Chas Skelly in a featherweight tilt. Sam Soriano? No Bruce, it’s Sean. Soriano spent all of round one trying to get Skelly off his back.
Round two saw Soriano light Skelly up on the feet, but a bizarre restart after a low blow saw Skelly smother Soriano on the ground a little more. More of the same in round three, although Soriano landed some decent strikes on the feet. Skelly is too sticky on the mat, he wins a decision. Bantamweights Chris Beal and Tateki Matsuda were up next. “Tech” put on a clinic in the first round, scoring a ton of low kicks, and showing a tight ground game.
Beal looked almost frozen as he started round two and Matsuda started unloading on him. The second half of the round belonged to Beal though, as he busted “Tech” up on the mat. The third round saw Beal get in some more top time, and this was a very close fight. A very game effort by Matsuda on seven days notice, but Beal is the real deal by UD. Middleweights Rafael Natal and Chris Camozzi were next, in a do-or-die fight for both men.
These guys are huge for 185 pounds, especially Camozzi. They power punch at an even rate, I expect “Sapo” wins the round with takedowns though. Natal looks sharp at the start of round two, but tired after a gritty stanza. It’s all on the last round now, and “Sapo” looks exhausted. A close final round, Natal by SD. Lightweights Al Iaquinta and Rodrigo Damm threw down, and “Raging” had a great first round.
Ther Serra-Longo product put on a striking clinic, and rocked Damm numerous times in round one.Damm looks tired in round two, and Iaquinta is making this in to an ugly boxing match, while Damm is wearing the fight. I’ll be surprised if Damm survives round three. WOW! This fight just exploded in to action. Damm eats a huge right and goes down, Herb Dean goes to wave it off, but Damm is up and now Iaquinta goes in for the kill.
Damm rocks Iaquinta now, but “Raging” comes back with a head kick, and now to huge elbows and Damm is done! Great win as team mate Chris Weidman cheers him on. Last up on the card is a flyweight battle between Justin Scoggins and John Moraga. Damn, Scoggins is like a dynamo, he easily won round one with his flashy striking and four minutes of top time. What a comeback by Moraga! Scoggins takes him down and land in a guillotine choke, and he taps!! Out of nowhere, great win for Moraga.
