UFC 150: Ben Henderson edges Frankie Edgar on judges' scorecards

Six months after meeting in the main event of UFC 144 in Saitama, Japan, Frankie Edgar and Benson Henderson squared off again, this time in Denver, Colorado.

Henderson had a strong opening, dominating Edgar with vicious leg kicks to the calf, which visibly slowed down the former champion. However, it was Edgar who responded with effective strikes and submission attempts, forcing Henderson into counter.

Both combatants had their moments during the fight. Ben Henderson used his size advantage to outmuscle Edgar, while “The Answer” proved he can punch, with a number of great combinations that hurt the champ. However, none of the fighters made any significant moves towards finishing the fight.

In the end, Ben Henderson wins 46-49, 48-47, 48-47 on judges’ scorecards. Frankie Edgar was visibly upset with the decision, but he will have to go back to the drawing board, with sights on working his way up for another title shot.

Nate Diaz is next for Ben Henderson.

The fight was basically a draw. I wish there was more of those so guys would be even more eager to get the finish.
I mean isnt that what a split decision means? When only 3 people cant even agree on who won??

I thought it was pretty much a draw – I had Frankie winning for sure rounds 2 and 5, Henderson winning for sure rounds 1 and 3 or 4 (can’t remember), then either 3 or 4 was too close to call. Neither fighter really went for the kill too much so it left a close decision by the judges and you can’t blame them.

One point of note – technically the overall score was 143-142 for Edgar, but the fight isn’t scored on points it is scored on majority decision? I never realized that until this fight.

Time to go back to the gladiator days when the fights weren’t over til one guy was finished, or reward both men with a loss, or sudden death rounds or maybe take the rounds away like it use to be and let the fight play out more naturally with a 15-25 minute bout? Either way this ish ain’t working

I have never met someone who comes close to enjoying watching the UFCas much as I do but that decision made me feel sick, I could barely type with my phone I was shaking with frustration so badly.

I purposely scored the fight as unbiased as a robot to give myself a fair idea of who would win and there is no way in hell Frankie lost that fight.

After the first it was all Edgar – he was busier every round, he got all the takedowns, he made the sub attempts, he had the trips, he landed more kicks, he landed the bigger punches and even got a legit knockdown.

It was a tough, close fight but seriously in what world Ben Henderson win that fight?

I had Frankie winning 2, 4 and 5. He was closer to finishing the fight than Ben, also a bit busier and more take-downs which lead to some submission attempts. I wouldn’t say it was a robbery but I believe the wrong man won.

I really wish they would throw rounds out and just judge the whole fight as one. The only thing that really happened was when frankie dropped henderson other wise its a coin flip. There is no rounds in a real fight no breaks just go at it. At least we dont have to see a rematch this time. Honestly I don’t mind edgar going to 145 it makes that division mush more interesting.

Why are people saying Frankie should drop down? He arguably won the fight. The UFC stat computer clearly showed Ben out striking Frankie, but fightmetric had 66 to 62 (striking and grappling edge) to Frankie, giving the fight a draw on a 10 point scoring system, but Frankie won the fight if you judge it overall. Frankie was not dominated at all during the fight, the only person in trouble was Ben. If Frankie goes down it would be a disappointment.

DW can’t wait for that $Aldo – Edgar$ fight either. Wonder if that’s why it was fixed because not a zillion years can anyone with reasonable eyesight and a modicum of MMA knowledge award that fight to Hendo.

I like the guy but no way did he win that. He landed some great kicks in round 1 and a few jabs throughout the fight as opposed to Edgar dropping him with punches, taking him down several times, controlling him whilst down, catching kicks and returning with his own kicks, great body shots and the better all round octagon control as well as winning clearly 3 rounds and IMO 4 as hendo only won round 1 IMO and at the very most round 3 as well.

I give up on MMA. I fear it is as corrupt as boxing now big bucks are involved and don’t believe DW when he says it’s out of his hands – it’s the same as politicians creating supranational institutions that now govern us saying it’s out of their hands. BULLSHIT!!!!

Maybe fans should start boycotting events until the judging is sorted out. Almost everyone who watched that fight thought Edgar won so it can’t be too hard of a job to pick some unbiased judges who aren’t prepaid to sway certain bouts for business interest.

Getting finishes in the upper echelons of this division is not that easy, unless you’re a freak of nature like BJ Penn. When you have guys with such good conditioning, toughness and evenly matched skill sets it’s hardly surprising that they went to a decision. I don’t think Nate v Bendo will be any different either, expect a 5 round war.

It’s a two man sport. It’s not like “oh i’m gonna knock him out or submit him” at my will. You can go for it, but that doesn’t mean your opponent is going to let you. Here is where I like the K-1 rules, everybody knows who is up a point. The score should be rallied to the fighters/fans/announcers during breaks, no confusion. That Dana “don’t leave it in the hands of the judges” BS is just not addressing the problem, but deflects it.

MMA is so hard to score. For example you take someone down then that should be a point for you right? what if he was able to reverse it and he lands on top of you? or one man is pressing that action moving forward BUT gets countered while moving forward and before he could strike his opponent has take him down? there as so many variables to mma it’s not as clear cut as striking combat sports where you can see who is winning (well most of the time Pacman Vs Bradley)

For MMA scoring to be more effective judges NEEDS to be better informed maybe have some ex fighters in the judging panels.
BUT as of this moment fighters HAS to try to finish to leave no doubts of who the winner is.

I think people need to calm down with this robbery talk, a robbery is Ring vs Fukuda. In this fight Ben won round 1 Frankie won round 2, and 3,4 and 5 where all really close, no one got robbed it just was a very close fight, and someone had to win, and someone had to lose.

Are you for for real? Round 1 clearly Hendersons, rounds 2,4 and 5 clearly Edgars, round 3 close. Overall Edgar controlled Hendo for good chunks of the fight, dropped him with punches, landed great body shots and towards the end had returned some great kicks himself. All I saw hendo do was land some great kicks in round 1 and the odd good jab here and there with the odd kick thrown in which Edgar started catching and punishing consistently as the fight went on. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!

I hear ya but that’s how you saw it. I don’t have my score cards in front of me but I also saw some rounds where Ben threw some combos with his hands that didn’t necessarily land everything but I could see that looking good to the judges. I saw Frankie holding Ben’s neck but not really doing anything. I guess you could call that control if you like or some people would call it nothing. I mean if Frankie holds his neck and Ben scoots himself 10 feet so he can be on the fence, that’s not really control. It’s all in how you saw it. I just thought it was closer than people are saying. I wouldn’t have complained whoever won.

No it is that people seem to ignore what Edgar does and only concentrate on what his opponent done (IE a few good kicks here and there and a few good jabs and ignore what Edgar done for 25 minutes). Maybe Edgar is too fast and skilled for idiots to appreciate but he was superb last night and the rightful winner but blind/corrupt judging prevented the right outcome.

the simply fact of the matter is; the real fans like us guys know that benson dodged a bullet, and managed to stroll out of that arena with frankies belt.
frankie is the epitome of what a champion is, and for him to be screwed in such manner is disgraceful and not acceptable. these judges need to all agree on who wins, a split decision? it’s a ridiculous outcome to have upon a fight. judges need to be held accountable for their decisions.
if you couldn’t see frankie dominated the grappling through out from the headlock, his striking was crisper with the right hand landing throughout along with body shots, his movement was better avoiding any major blows, he scored the most decisive knock down of the entire fight and he pushed the pace never stopping.

frankie edgar, is the real champion. screw benson henderson, he dreams of being the fighter frankie is.

I thought round 3 and 4 were pretty close, Bendo landed that strong knee a few times on a charging frankie that I thought scored big, those knees were really landing. I was voting Bendo and routing for Bendo, But I thought Frankie won a VERY close decision, Edgar just looked a little more beat up and Bendo kept acting so confident in the last few rounds I think it swayed the judges lol.

Well I really feel I am a real fan. I think Henderson had 1,3 and 4. No doubt Frankie was doing a good job but henderson seemed to control the ring a bit more, his striking was landing more significantly more often. Frankie had the best single punch and had 2 takedowns that never went anywhere. The fans in the seats boo every 5 seconds so i never take them into account. I feel the right man won and am happy with the decision. P4P though I would lean towards Frankie.

Really tough break for Frankie. I gave him 3 rounds as well.

It’s hard for me to criticize them for leaving it to the judges. In my opinion, it’s just harder for the lighter/smaller fighters to knock each other out… especially among the elite guys.

Unless your name is Ben Henderson. He’s 3-1 in close decisions, and the only one he lost was clearly Pettis’s fight.

You are obviously not the only one with that opinion, but a few things:

Frankie’s striking was landing more, and more significantly. He also controlled the cage with his footwork, and Ben admitted that in the post fight interview. The fans boo’d loudly for a decision they didn’t feel is fair, pretty different than a bunch of drunks yelling for action in a boring fight.

If you think Frankie won that fight, I can understand. But robbed? Please. It was really close, something like a difference of 4 signif. strikes over 5 rounds.

I think Frankie came closer to winning this fight than he did the first one. But then I didn’t think it should have been a rematch in the first place.

Part of selling a fight is being able to hype an interesting story. But another Edgar rematch? The UFC have already had to flog that one for a couple of years now.

Cool but I still never listen to those in the seats. It has to be clear cut or else the underdog should win. Ben admitted that he controlled the pace not the octagon. I dissagree with the striking. Regardless Ben and Frankie both deserve to lose that fight and I am just glad there won’t be a number 3 for a while. I was screaming at them to fight for the last minute or two.
