Tyron Woodley Talks About “Fun” Training At Roufusport

Number three ranked UFC welterweight Tyron Woodley has been busy preparing for his battle with Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183, but not at his usual home of ATT (American Top Team). “T-Wood” has actually been training with the likes of Anthony & Sergio Pettis, CM Punk and  Ben Askren at Roufusport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Strikeforce veteran says that training at Duke Roufus‘ gym has helped to make fighting fun again, as he told FOX Sports:

“One of the things I like most about Roufusport is, really, the culture. A lot of times you’re training in fight camps and running, and hitting mitts and sparring. Those things get old kind of quick. I like the fact that they allow fun into the room,”

“They allow creativity into the room. Everyone is allowed to be an individual. The sport MMA is evolving every week…it got my creative juices flowing. I enjoy being here, being safe. Being able to make it here to this fight without any injuries. Sometimes we’ve got to prove a point in training and I didn’t feel a need to do that here. I felt like I grew as a fighter, I felt like I grew as an individual, and once again, fighting became fun for me.”

Woodley is still representing ATT, but perhaps his ongoing beef with fellow welterweight and team mate Hector Lombard helped in his decision to train away. “”The Chosen One” and “Showeather” have had a feud going for a while now, with the former Bellator champ accusing Woodley of ducking him.

Either way, we could be seeing a new version of Tyron Woodley at UFC 183 as he steps in the octagon to take on the undefeated Kelvin Gastelum. His last outing was an impressive knockout against Dong Hyun Kim in Macau, China, successfully putting to rest the demons of his UFC 174 pasting at the hands of Rory MacDonald.

Woodley had come under criticism for his cardio and lack of game planning before and after his fight with “Red King”, so maybe training with “Showtime” and co. has helped in those departments. How do you think “The Chosen One” will do against “Mini Cain” this coming Saturday (January 31st, 2015)?
