The Ultimate Fighter 19 kicked off on Fox last night, and the elimination fights were certainly an entertaining bunch, filled with some great finishes. 32 hopefuls for the light-heavy and middleweight divisions looked to make it through to the final 16 of the famed reality show.
Featherweights BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar will square off for the third time at the end of the show, and were present with UFC president Dana White for the first episode’s 16 fights. Here’s a recap of the evening’s best finishes and the results:
LowKick’s good friend Daniel ‘The Dragon’ Spohn went up against Tyler King in the first fight of the evening, and he made a big statement in front of his peers. After opening with a nasty body kick, Spohn annihilated King with a big right hook as he rushed in. King’s mother was present and rushed to her son’s aid, and White, Penn and Edgar looked on in shock.
Hector Urbina scored an impressive submission over Adrian Miles, after relentlessly chasing a takedown and sinking in a guillotine choke. Todd Monaghan also scores a submission win after a barn burner against Jake Huen. Monaghan scored a great comeback win with a slick armbar. Cathal Pedred gets a bye due to injuries.
Roger Zapata scored an impressive TKO win against Tyler Minton after bloodying his foe on the feet and digging deep for the finish. Bellator veteran Lyman Good got dominated by Ian Stephens in the evening’s upset, as Stephens was able to use his wrestling to grind out a decision. Anton Barzin submitted Cody Mumma with a tight armbar in one round, and Matt Van Buren scored a KO against Daniel Vizcaya using Travis Browne elbows. Patrick Walsh submitted Doug Sparks in quick fashion
Conor McGregor cheers on comrade Chris Fields as he wins by injury TKO against Josh Stansbury, Tim Williams battled through his heart felt story of brain surgery to get the TKO against Bojan Velickovic, Chris Weidman’s training partner Eddie Gorman takes the decision against Matt Gabel, Josh Clarke submits John Poppie, and Cory Anderson decisioned a gassed Kelly Andudnson.
Two-time TUF fighter Nordine Taleb lost a decision to Mike King, and Diego Lhima takes the judge’s nod against Adam Stroup. Check out the team listings below, as well as the vicious knockout courtesy of Dan Spohn:
