Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Brown Set To Headline UFC On FOX 12, Winner Gets Title Shot

Fresh off of his UFC 173 destruction of Jake ‘The Juggernaut’ Ellenberger (watch the highlights here), No. 1-ranked UFC welterweight Robbie Lawler already has his next fight lined up.

And it’s going to be a good one.

UFC president Dana White tweeted that Lawler will face off with surging No. 5-ranled contender Matt Brown in the main event of UFC on FOX 12, which takes place on July 26, 2014 from the SAP Center in San Jose, California, expressing his excitement at the blockbuster match-up:

Lawler is apparently hell-bent on getting back to a title shot after his narrow UFC 171 loss to injured champion Johny Hendricks, and White said this is the bout that could get him there:

With seven straight wins following his impressive TKO win over No. 15 Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 40 on May 17, Brown has been on a relentless surge through the UFC welterweight division. But it’s safe to say he’s never faced a fighter even close to the caliber of “Ruthless,” especially this new, motivated version of him.

Regardless, Lawler vs. Brown is one of the hardest-hitting bouts the UFC could have  put together, and the winner will deserve their shot at gold when Hendricks comes back from biceps surgery sometime this fall. Looks like the winner of UFC 74’s Rory MacDonald vs. Tyron Woodley got left out in the cold….
