Poll: Will Anthony Johnson Become The Next Light Heavyweight Champ?

anthony johnson

Anthony Johnson emerged from UFC On FOX 14 as a clear title contender in the 205-pound division. He destroyed Alexander Gustafsson like no-one has ever done before, and made a statement in front of “The Mauler’s” home crowd. In doing so, “Rumble” punched his ticket to a long-awaited fight against reigning boss Jon Jones.

It seems like a lifetime ago now that Johnson was an oversized welterweight losing to Josh Koscheck or missing the middleweight limit against Vitor Belfort. He has grown since then, and in to a very dangerous and legitimate striker. Gus was the best 205-pounder in the world outside of Jones, and Anthony Johnson took him out like it was nothing.

The UFC 165 rematch between “The Mauler” and “Bones” should have happened right away, but may never come to fruition after last night’s (Sat. January 24th, 2015) demolition at the hands of “Rumble”. Or maybe the two will meet again, just not for the belt.

Johnson has scary power that has seen him wreck the number one in the division, a man who’s style is eerily similar to the champion’s. So will we see a new kingpin after Jon Jones vs Anthony Johnson?

It would pay to remember that Jones has never fought anyone with the KO power or ability that Johnson has, the closest he has come to that is possibly Glover Teixeira. GT had little movement or technique to offer the champ, but “Rumble” outworked Gus on the feet in Sweden, something very few of us expected.

So how about it, will Anthony Johnson become the next light-heavyweight champion, or is Jon Jones going to remain on top?
