POLL: Which UFC Middleweight has the best chance to beat Anderson Silva?

Anderson “The Spider” Silva once again proved he’s one of the greatest fighters in MMA history. With fighters like Michael Bisping, Mark Munoz, Hector Lombard, Alan Belcher, and many others currently in the mix for a shot at the title, who has the best chance to dethrone Anderson Silva?

no one has a chance. this is a good time for silva to retire and actually allow the MW division to be interesting again like the WW was wen GSP got injured

I would have to say Munoz and Belcher have the best chance to beat Anderson. They are both aggressive with their takedowns, like Chael, but both also have shown more effective ground and pound with TKO stoppages. I don’t think Silva would survive a 23 minute beating from one of these guys (IF they could give him one…which is doubtful).

Maybe Lombard truly is the elite fighter many of you think he is. I am willing to admit that possibility. But he has never fought anyone close to Anderson Silva’s level. The fact is, he has compiled a fantastic record beating up B level competition in second rate organizations. He doesn’t even deserve mention here until he beats a top 10 guy in the UFC.

Munoz is on a 4 fight win streak and has one 7 of 8 at MW, so if he beats Weidman, which I believe he will, he definitely deserves a title shot. Belcher is also on a 4 fight win streak and has won 6 his last 7, and has an impressive 9-4 record in the UFC. If he wins his next fight, he deserves a title shot too.

I like Stann, but he is going to lose a decision to Bisping. Bisping is just a much more technical striker and will pick him apart on the feet.

Bisping deserves to be on this list too, but without the takedown threat of some of the other guys, he would be a quick KO victim for the Spider.

I guess I would go Belfort but if Weidman was more experienced I would go him. I know Weidman didn’t look great at all against Maia but I think with a few years under his belt he could be a good match up for Silva, but Silva will more than likely be gone by the time Weidman woud be experienced enough to take him on and have a legit shot. Plus I’m not jumping on the Lombard hype train yet and to me Munoz is the most overated Middleweight in the division and Silva could knock him out with a jab.

Really Lombard? He has never beat any top 20 fighter. He was beat by “Dreamcatcher” a well rounder counter striker similar style to Silva.

Belfort has the hands to finish anybody in the in any weight class on a good night, but he is so un-reliable.

    Munoz is a lesser Sonnen.

Bisping thinks he will be able to stand and trade shots ha.

Belcher is a tough guy and could pull an upset but could also get stopped in an instant standing.

    Stann is a lesser Belcher.

Weidmen is a serious threat but at this point hasnt earned a shot and is a little early to tell how tough he will be but so far looks future champ material.

As of today I really dont think any of these guys will beat Silva in his next fight. 1+ years from now who knows but in 6+- months if he fights again he WILL have 16 title defenses.

Weidman if his gas tank either improves, or just wasn’t up to par because of short notice against Maia.

The guys wrestling, and grappling are out of this world. Holds wins in wrestling over Jon Jones and Ryan Bader along with making All-American. On top of that he made the ADCC, and held his own with Andre Galvao after a year in BJJ (insane to say the least).

Let me get this straight…Silva should retire because he’s too good?

Also the poll asks who has the best chance, not who has a good chance.

Actually, it got the UFC a lot of pay per view buys, and had nothing to do with him getting has “ass beat”. He got his ass beat because Silva beat his ass, not because he talked shit.

Why isn’t Dan Henderson on the list? Sonnen’s fighting style was the most effective any middleweight has used against Silva. Hendo can fight the exact same way as Sonnen, except unlike Sonnen, he has KO power.

PS. Lombard is too small for Silva.

Vitor Belfort is great, but if he was even healthy enough to face Silva, we all saw what happened. Chael lasted longer. Weidman, maybe someday, but Bisping? That’s a tough sell. Anderson is just so dominant still to this day. Munoz or Belcher? Both good, not in AS league though. Every fighter on this list is top tier. Anderson Silva has created a new tier. He stands alone atop it.

I think we also watched him doing those in the open workout and many theorized he was trying to mess with Anderson’s mind – surely he wouldn’t try one of those awkward looking moves in the fight…..

I just cant see Munoz beating Silva. If you can get rocked my Maia on the feet then honestly if Silva just breathes on Munoz he’ll knock him out.

I say age really, that or Yahweh. Or himself…imo he’s the one responsible for his losses.

Seriously out of that list, vitor is the most threatening. Henderson still isn’t a real threat to anderson. Sure he has wrestling but he doesn’t have stamina at all and trying to stand with anderson was how he ended up on the ground in the first place.

Lombard i can’t see.He would be careless and overconfident. Haven’t seen weidman fight. Noone else i think is ready, but really the guy who had the best chance would be Jon jones and everyone else is just a tier below.

I wouldn’t have said it before I saw him fight Sonnen, but I think Bisping could do it. I think that how easily he pushed Sonnen off, as well as how well he controlled with the clinch and even the late takedown, speaks volumes about how strong of a grappler he is. Sonnen controlled Silva for most of the first round even if he had to work for it, and Bisping pushed Chael off like it was easy. Between that, Bisping’s strong ground and pound, and Bisping’s great submission awareness/defense I think he’d really have the potential to dominate Silva on the ground.

Keywords: “on the ground”. Bisping’s great on his feet, but Silva’s more accurate, just as fast if not faster, more evasive, has a better killer instinct, and has a better chin. I think Bisping could do it, it would just be a matter of convincing him to fight like a wrestler for that fight, an I’m not sure he would. If he tried to stand and trade, only going for a takedown after getting rocked, he’d get dominated just like everyone else Silva has fought.

Sonnen made a terrible mistake and Silva is unbeatable? Sonnen bossed Silva again until that mistake and showed the so called GOAT is far from the finished article. Jones has more claim than Silva already to that title, as does GSP, Edgar and others as their all round game has no major weaknesses unlike Silva.

I do not think any current MW can beat him unless it is a hail mary KO/sub, that being said if I had to choose one I think Bisping has the best chance. Bisping doesn’t have one punch KO power but Silva’s chin is oen of the best in MMA so it doesn’t really matter anyway.

I think Bisping’s stick and move kickboxing style, unbreakable pace, very good wrestling, great submission defense, good chin and UFC experience give him the best chance against Silva… that being said the best chance is still a very small chance.

It’s more that Anderson doesn’t allow you to make any mistakes. Round two was all silva. He stuffed chael and punched him to submission. End of story. Chael lost twice. It’s not a fluke when the guy wins 14 in a row is it?

No, the fighter with the best chance to beat Silva is the fighter who stops Silva from rubbing vaseline all over himself and the one who doesnt wear any bottoms to prevent shorts grabbing. Someone with a good top game.

So Dakota Cochrane. He will rape Silva all day. :]

No one said it was a fluke but it was a mistake that gave Silva the chance to finish and Sonnen did boss him again and Silva is NOT the GOAT, just a deadly striker and great finisher.

Lombard has the best chance, only because he is the one who pushes the pace and has brilliant power and stand up. Bisping has another good chance as he is a brilliant game player so if he comes in with the right plan, he could win. Everyone else has either lost already or will get battered (e.g belcher, stann, munoz) their all good fighters but I cant see them beating Silva.

your right there. I think people will put up a fight against Silva but I cant see anyone winning. I also think if GSP steps up, this will be the biggest draw of all time and get people to start liking GSP again. I think he is amazing but people are forgetting this due to the long lay off. Superfight needs to happen soon!!

I agree with all your analysis, but I think Lombard definitely needs to fight either Belcher or Bisping or Munoz. No one should get lunch pass to the front in my opinion. Its not fair or professional

Munoz in my opinion should be next or put him against Belcher….

Stann, Bisping are out and need to to fight each other someone like Belcher to move to No.2, 3 0r No.4 positions
