Palhares Fallout: Mike Pierce ‘Really Pissed Off,’ Alan Belcher Challenges ‘Toquinho’ To Jiu-Jitsu Match

UFC welterweight Mike Pierce never had a chance to mount any offense against Rousimar Palhares at UFC Fight Night 29 this Wednesday, succumbing to a first round heel hook that “Toquinho” held tightly for too long, resulting in his release and banning from the UFC. He was also suspended for 120 days by Brazilian athletic commission CABMMA.

The entire incident has left a bad taste in the mouth of many. Most wonder how Palhares continued to tweak heel hooks until his opponents screamed out in pain. He’s claimed that he’s not an evil man or that he never meant to hurt Pierce, but words don’t really matter when your actions put fellow fighters’ careers in jeopardy.

For now, Pierce will return to his home in Oregon to get an MRI on his injured knee, but early reports believe that he’ll make it through without any significant injury. A ton of news has been centered around Palhares, but Pierce texted Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting earlier today to give his take on the unfortunate situation:

“I’m just really pissed off right now.”

Fair enough. Pierce has a right to be pissed off because he could have been seriously injured by the repeat offense of Palhares, who was previously suspended for holding onto a hold that finished Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111.

Here’s to hopping that Pierce escapes unscathed and his next fight doesn’t suffer due to Palhares gross negligence of basic sportsmanship protocols. The whole ordeal has prompted a backlash from the entire MMA community. Alan Belcher, a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt who beat Palhares via TKO at UFC on Fox 3, recently issued a challenge via Twitter, offering to take “Toquinho” on in a Jiu-jitsu match at Metamoris to teach him a lesson:

Regardless what happens there, it’s frustrating to see a fighter with Palhares’ talent squander his career away because of simply not following the rules. These fighters are not only visibly tapping out, but also screaming at the top of their lungs in pain. What other telling signs are needed to exhibit their willingness to give up in the face of injury. It’s been an odd and unfortunate set of circumstances, and Pierce has a right to be mad. We here at LowKick only hope that he’s not badly injured because of the transgression.

Bottom line pierce talked a lot of crap about palhares being a cheat and bow he was going ti kick his ***. Backup your words dude instead of getting tapped in 30 sec

Bottom line Pierce is that you got finished in 30 seconds, whether the heel hook was held too long or not.

You guys are right. Pierce didn't back up his smack but I take issue with the "bottom line". I think the bottom line or most important thing isn't whether you back up your pre-fight banter it is whether the rules are violated at the risk of serious injury. If RP had let go of the hold when the ref said stop and then stood up and stood over Pierce that would have been a way better statement.

Yeah, Pierec is probably going to say next that if Palhares didn't let go he was going to destroy

Pierce is just like the guy who calls you out and then you kick his a s s and then he says he's calling the cops on you. These guys brag about how they are warriors and put their lives on the line and then come out with this bs.

hendo lands the h-bomb against bisping, bispings body drops like a sack potatos, hendo goes for the kill with a diving right and everybody is happy???
i really hope pierce knee is ok, but i think all fighters are training to finish fights and paul harris goes for the kill like hendo only with bjj!! i have mixed feelings but i think the cut was to much!!

Don't get me wrong, Palharas was a piece of crap for not letting go on time, but banning him from the ufc is a bit harsh.
You can argue that Penn held the choke for way too long after the tap agains pulver, and Mir held on for a while too after Brock tapped in the kneebar, granted he let go after the ref jumped in.
Overall, I think this would have been overlooked had pierce not complained so much about it.

Another point, once you've been suspended or fined and you continue to do it, well there you go. I dont think Hendo had ever done that before.
At least most here lately have debated intelligently without attacking each other.

hendo did a similar move in pride with wanderlei!! left hook drops wand and hendo goes for the kill before the ref can stop it.

I didn't know they cut Palhares, I know that's the 2nd time he's been in trouble for holding a move to long but wow man I watched that fight and I didn't really think he held on to long. You hold on til the Ref stops it. aiy yai yai. Pierce is a punk and his complaining led to Palhares' release. LAME it was a leg lock and you tapped in 30 seconds. LAME

Same here man. I don't see what people are crying about on this one. Nobody stops fighting until ref breaks it up. Who cares if he was screaming and tapping, Palhares has to wait for the ref not the scream.
