Mark Hunt: JDS was the world champion, but I’ve been fighting the top level my whole career

In a UFC interview prior to Mark Hunt‘s May 25th clash with former world champion Junior dos Santos, ‘The Super Samoan’ appears to share his feeling about the blockbuster matchup. The surging Hunt believes JDS will try to take the fight to the ground once he recognizes the power of Hunt’s striking. Quite the interesting viewpoint here, as many believe dos Santos to possess some of the best standup skills in all of MMA.

Hunt acknowledges that JDS was once the UFC Heavyweight Champion, but also notes that he has been fighting top level fighters his entire career. The championship is his goal, and he believes a victory over JDS will get him the next shot at the belt. Who is your pick to win this battle of power strikers?

I agree, I think JDS is going to end-up trying to take this to the ground. Personally, I don't think Jr. will have the wrestling skills to get that massive cinder-block to the ground, but we shall see.

Either way, Hunt is easily the equal of Roy Nelson in toughness and has more of a brawlers attitude. I think Hunt is going to KO the former champ. This should be a great fight.

if struve could get a takedown then i think jds could too. hunt may have fought top tier kickboxers but this is going to be the hardest mma match up of his career

Agreed. This is the toughest and most important fight of Hunt's career.

As to the JDS getting a take-down, he's not as tall as Struve, nor has Jr. ever demonstrated any real desire to be or brilliance on, the ground. Struve has. Given that he's never really exercised that part of his game before, I really don't think he's just going to be able to pull it out of his back-pocket and slap it on Mark.

I believe that he might well try to take The Big Samoan down, I just don't think he'll be successful in doing it or keeping him there and accomplishing anything with it, should he actually be able to do so.

Again though and regardless, it should be a great fight.

JDS took Shane Carwin down twice. Carwin is ten times the wrestler Hunt will ever be. JDS can most definitely take Mark Hunt down, and if he doesn't get caught early, he will.

Cain Velasquez showed the blue print to smash Jnr Dos Santos. Hunts not going to be intimidated by Jnr dos santos unlike other opponents

If hunt can push dos santos against the cage and pressure him until he starts slowing down he'll stand a chance, I don't believe he's fast enough to catch jr in a striking match though, not while he's fresh anyway. I'll be rooting for hunt but if he lets jr control the pace/distance its going to be a long painful night.

    Hunt's K1 striking > JDS's boxing
