Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis 145lbs title fight confirmed for August 3rd

That’s right, LowKick’ers. Anthony “Showtime” Pettis will move down to Featherweight for a superfight with Jose Aldo. Pettis texted Dana White about being the next in line for Jose Aldo, and it looks like his wish was granted.

UFC President Dana White has officially confirmed the news via USA Today. The fight between Aldo and Pettis will take place on August 3rd, and is expected to serve as a headliner.

Here’s what Dana White said about the match-up:

“Two of the baddest dudes in the fight business are going to fight at 145 pounds. These guys are two of the most amazing, gravity-defying athletes in the sport. I am so pumped for this fight.” – USA Today

It seems as Pettis decided not to wait for his shot at the UFC Lightweight title. Showtime defeated Donald Cerrone to claim his spot as the number one contender, but former Strikeforce Welterweight champ Gilbert Melendez is the one who will challenge Benson Henderson at UFC on FOX 7.

In addition to his trademark striking, Pettis is probably the most well-rounded fighter Aldo has ever faced inside the UFC Octagon, including Frankie “The Answer” Edgar. More than anything, Pettis’ deep gas tank and relentlessness could pose a serious threat to Jose Aldo‘s reign of terror in the UFC Featherweight division.

oooohhhh sweet. some serious talent clashing. i really dont know who to pick. pettis is looking way sharp after easily dispatching cerrone. i think he may wear aldo down and take it in later rounds.

This is one of sickest matchups assuming Perez makes the weight without issues like he thinks he will. I am way more excited with this matchup then Perez vs Henderson…

I see, so now the new trend is winning fights in one weight class to get title fights in another…. this also shows how stacked the feather weight division is….

      exactly!
-Chael Sonnen gets LHW title shot without ever fighting at LHW (in UFC).
-Frankie Edgar gets FW title shot without ever being a FW.
-Pettis gets FW shot without ever being a FW.
-Cormier potentially getting LHW title shot without ever being a LHW.
-Rashad Evans almost got MW shot without ever being MW.

-Not to do with weight but Nick Diaz gets WW title shot after losing and being out for over a year.

I will always love the UFC but damn do I miss the days where guys worked their way up to the title shot and actually earned it.

Feel sorry for Lamas, Hendo, Hendricks and all the guys bound to get screwed in the future.

Calm down, I remember the comments on lowkick about the who was better the WEC or UFC LightW and believe me while everyone respected the WEC it wasn't obvious that a guy like Bendo would be UFC LW champ. Gilbert is a champion and a respected fighter who's arrival in the UFC is long overdue. The truth is he went stale at SF, in a perfect world he would have came over to the UFC 3 years ago. The beauty about LW is that talent wise it's the richest division so even if you don't think someone deserves a title shot your gonna get a high quality fight.

What a sweet fight, even better than Aldo Edgar in my opinion. If Pettis wins I hope he still goes for the LW Belt cause hes already beat the current champ so why not

Awesome!!!! Would love to see Aldo taking him down and trying to controll him on the ground…..think that if he keeps it standing he could lose.

    1) Damn August is so far away.
    2) Melendez is overrated BIG time, and Pettis should have gotten the nod for the title shot at 155 after his demolition of Donald Cerrone. Melendez does not deserve an immediate title shot.
    3) Can Pettis even make 145 and fight the way he does now?
    4) If Pettis has no trouble making 45 he will beat Jose Aldo handily.

My two favourite fighters in one ring. Crazy!!!
Pettis wins ALDO and after that takes Benson at 155 lb and becomes champion in two categories!!!

This match-up just shows how dominant the current UFC champs are.

Aldo, Jones, and Silva have to hunt for worthy contenders–who they have not already beaten.

Even Cain will have trouble now that Overeem has been exposed. I am not sure I want to see another Cain vs. Bigfoot right away, and a Cain vs. JDS seems too soon right now.

GSP has a couple of good fights in his division–but he will run out of contenders fast if he wins against Diaz and Hendricks. I am not sure Maia could be competitive against GSP, but I am willing to be convinced.

At any rate, I like both Pettis and Aldo–and I believe Aldo has not faced competition which really tested him–and Pettis should do just that.

I hope Pettis can make the cut OK, without losing his mojo–but hell, Aldo already cuts a lot and has trouble making weight–so Pettis should be able to do it.

This is great matchup but I have two issues with it. 1) August seems too far away. Why not make it for Late June(assuming they are both healthy)? 2) Although this is a great fight it's not a "Super Fight." That term is getting thrown around too much lately.

I feel Aldo will be better early and Pettis later. I think Aldo needs to risk gassing out in this fight and go for the kill early like he used to as he was far more unstoppable then than now.
