Heading Into UFC 165, Jon Jones Blasts Daniel Cormier and Glover Teixeira

UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones hasn’t exactly made a bunch of friends during his dominant tenure. Alexander Gustafsson recently likened the UFC’s treatment of Jones to that of a spoiled child, and it seems like every week there’s a new fighter looking to call Jones out for a title shot.

A lot of that is just inherent to the fight game, but it’s starting to look like several fighters just don’t like ‘Bones.’ Daniel Cormier, long rumored to cut down to 205 for a fight with Jones, may be the most outspoken combatant in this fray. That doesn’t sit well with Jones, because he doesn’t think Cormier deserves a chance to fight him. But he does believe that African-American fighters should do more to stick together in MMA:

“To be honest with you, I don’t think Daniel Cormier really deserves a big fight,” Jones said. “I don’t respect him as a person. I think fighting me would be an opportunity of a lifetime for him. I don’t think I have much to gain from beating Daniel Cormier because no one knows who he is, and he hasn’t really proved much. He seems to really not like me and be a big hater of mine. It’s sad, considering we’re both African-American and there’s not many of us in the sport. We should try to find a common bond. We don’t need to be friends, but we should at least respect each other. It’s pathetic that me and Rashad have such a bad relationship and me and Daniel have such a bad relationship.” – via MMA Fighting

That’s an interesting stance taken by Jones, who both simultaneously calls Cormier out as undeserving but then asks him to stick together as members of a common group. It’s a strange mixture of feelings, and one that Cormier most likely isn’t going to respond well to.

If Jones gets past Gustafsson with ease in Toronto this weekend, the short list of worthy contenders to his belt is going to really be narrowed down to two competitors: Cormier and Glover Teixeira. Many would argue that Cormier is in fact deserving of a shot at Jones, and since DC is one of the highest ranked Heavyweights in the UFC, Jones does stand to gain much by beating him. ‘Bones’ may have a point when he calls for African-American fighters to band together, but starting out by saying you don’t respect someone is no way to foster camaraderie.

As far as Teixeira goes, Jones doesn’t think he’s ready for a title shot either, based on his recent performance against Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 28:

“I don’t think he’s ready to beat me. I thought he showed signs, being punched that hard by Bader shows me where he’s at. No matter what your excuse is, it still happened. If you’re a seasoned vet and you said you allowed overconfidence to be your weakness, it’s still a weakness you allowed to happen in the first place. I don’t think he’s the guy who’s going to beat me.”

Jones has taken his time in the spotlight to come out with some precise and criticizing words about the two people he’s most likely to face next. Whether he deems them worthy or not, he’ll most likely face one of them in his next fight should he get past Gustafsson. What is your take on Jones’ words here? Is he trying to stir the pot and hype his next fight already, or is he just playing the heel so the PPV buys will roll right in?

the comments he made concerning race are ignorant and small minded. They really show his age and maturity level.

I don't necessarily judge him for this because I can only imagine how difficult it must be to reached his level of stardom at such a young age, everything he says is written down or recorded so that it can be judged by complete strangers and critics all over the world.

that being said, seriously bones? I can't recall any black/white animosity in the UFC at any time. why is he being defensive?

Yeah, I fail to see how race is an issue or was raised at all.

Further, Mike's point about Jone's stating that Cormier is undeserving, which at the moment is true, but at the same time saying they should stick together because they are of the same race, is a valid one. It's passive agressive BS and Bones trying to have it both ways.

Regardless, Jones is a beast and would probably kill Cormier in a fight. He has five inches of height advantage, twelve-and-a-half inches of reach advantage and has beat five former UFC champions in a row; handily.

Cormier needs to earn a fight with Jones and not just be hyped into it. On this subject, Jones has a point. The rest is nonsense.

Beyond that Jones is right about Glover. He's not ready for Bones and the champ would crush him.

Being a brotha i totally understand what Bones is saying but at the same time he should of made it right between him & Rashad the second that last round was over, but he was too busy dirty dancing with Greg Jackson. Thats kinda why i'm not feeling A.S. right now due to the fact that he has all these other fighters talking sh*t about him, & his high pitch voice have'n azz wanna hate on the P4P Rich Homey Floyd.

But yeah he's right about DC fat Uncle Tom azz. If Dan came in the UFC talk'n reckless about Sonnen or Fedor, folks would hate him, but….BUT he's talking about the brotha Bones & thats why he's gaining fans quickly.

And yeah i said the same thing 2 years ago on this site when C.Kongo made a video portraying ghetto black people while two white guys standing with him thought it was the funniest thing they have ever seen. I pretty much mentioned that its only 5 bros in the company, why are you sh*t'n on your race SELL OUT

Thats enough commenting for the night gotta get back 2 work cuz those burger cant flip themselves…..SSSSSIKE haha justa fool'n

Well in order to be African-American, they would have to be American.

So why would you count other countries?

Yoel Romero is Cuban by the way.

But yeah, there are plenty of African-American athletes in MMA.

Kevin Randleman huh??? O.K. dipshit now list all the white fighters in the UFC but stop typing when you reach the 95th fighter. Im proud of Jones for saying what he said because it's the truth. He was the first person DC disrespectfully called out & he instantly became everyone's favorite.
If they were buddies, you lames would be hating on two brotha's intead of 1

It always amazes me how the race card gets brought up by an individual being fed with a silver spoon….You would think bones was living in the ghetto and working as a slave….When is the world going to stop taking race every five minutes when it has absolutely nothing to do with MMA. Lets talk race if African Americans have to sit at the back of the bus, use seperate bathrooms, are refused entry into universities, are not allowed to compete in UFC,, unallowed in military….People are so delusional about race…who cares what your skin colour is…This whole we need to stick together is nonsense. Last time i checked, it didn't matter if you were black brown or white you could train at any mma gym.

I can't stand haters. Your all the same hating what somebody else is doing. Fyi jones girl is white and his kids are mixed. Dummies, it is no different than brazilians having pride and respect for each other. Any race of people can love there race and respect it and not be racist.

It's very, very different than Brazilians having pride and respect in each other. Brazilian is a nationality, not a race.

Promoting your own country is considered patriotic.

Promoting your own race is considered…racist.

      Think about it.

I sure am glad I don't have to like people to enjoy watching them fight. Jones is an incredible athlete and could be one of the greatest, but he should keep his mouth shut.

He's the Champ an outspoken one at that. So rant on…but let me ask you this, how would me & you look if every chance we get take arguing & taking cheap shots at each other seeing that we're both African Americans on a prodominately caucasion site? STUPID & that's all what the homie is saying.

It's cool to be the champ and it's fine to be outspoken.. but not if all you say is stupid sh*t! The one who started the whole "cheap shot" nonsense was Bones. I don't know if you are familiar with the whole situation but it's not DC that started the nonsense. DC reacted to the childish antics of Bones.

Which tells me Bones is a f*cking hypocrite and this is not the first situation where that has come to light. You can't talk **** behind someone's back and when someone confronts you about it act all **** hurt and act like a child. MAN UP! take responsibillity for your actions and then on top of that you want to talk some sh*t about how African Americans should get together, while u just threw the man under the bus.

It's a competative sport! They make a living beating eachother senseless, so people will talk sh*t. That is just the reality of the situation but if you choose to throw yourself in there and act a certain way, you better keep the preaching to yourself and stop trying to paint an image of yourself that leaks fakeness and hypocrisy.

Just be real! If you're a d*ck, be a d*ck and don't try to be a p*ssy in front of the camera.

bk\la bla bla bla bla….And Hateocracy makes no sense in his first comment to the end. Saying Bones and Rashad should have squashed. Maybe they really don't want to. Nothing racist there. Your kind of saying let the whites hate the black but black on black should not be considered . Jon Jones sounds like an idiot for going there on this one. But back to DC. Everything said about Cormier is dead on. Hes fought nobody in his career and thinks hes the best. Hes loud and talks wayyyyyy to much on his analyst jobs. Hes trying to be like Chael but its not working. His opinions are off the wall and should let other people speak a lottttt more on the ultimate insider or whatever show hes on. The whole I'll drop weight talk has gotten old. He needs wayyy more ufc fights first.
