Dana White: Lawler Will ‘Likely’ Defend Title Against Woodley At UFC 201 or UFC 202
After a somewhat controversial decision victory over Carlos Condit in a back and forth war for the ages at last January’s UFC 195, the future was unclear for reigning welterweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler.
The 170 pound weight class is currently booming with contenders, making the Lawler’s next challenge a tough decision to make for the UFC.
An instant rematch with Condit seemed to be a strong possibility, as well as a bout with the rising Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, who recently dismantled former champion Johny Hendricks.
Veteran Demian Maia has been on a roll as of late, and Tyron Woodley has been waiting for a title shot for what seems like forever now.
And of course, there’s always the possibility of a potential return to action for former long-time divisional kingpin Georges St. Pierre.
After months of speculation, however, it appears as if the promotion is closing in on a decision, as UFC President Dana White recently spoke on Lawler’s future (Via MMAFighting):
“He’s terrorizing me for UFC 200 like every fighter is right now,” White said, “but Robbie is going to fight at either 201 or 202.”
“I don’t know who yet,” White said of Lawler’s opponent, “but more than likely going to be [Tyron] Woodley.”
Woodley, a man undoubtedly deserving of a title shot, is currently ranked No. 3 in the divisional rankings. “The Chosen One” has won four out of his last five bouts, and is coming off of back to back victories over Dong Hyun Kim and Kelvin Gastelum.
Woodley was supposed to face off with Hendricks last October, but “Bigg Rigg” was forced out of the fight on weigh in day.
Prior to his clash with Condit, Lawler had picked up four wins in a row, including a title defense over Rory MacDonald in one of the best fights of 2015.
