Countdown To UFC 172: Phil Davis vs. Anthony Johnson

Last seen defeating former champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida with a highly controversial decision at UFC 163, No. 4-ranked light heavyweight Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis will face returning No. 14 Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the co-main event of this Saturday night’s (April 26, 2014) UFC 172 from the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore Maryland.

With only one loss on his mixed martial arts (MMA) record, Davis is looking to prove he’s getting dangerously close to his long-awaited title shot. However, he’ll have to get past a mountain of a challenge in “Rumble,” who recently returned to the UFC after he was released from the promotion for missing weight heading into his UFC 142 loss to Vitor Belfort.

Johnson rebounded with efficiency, winning six straight bouts in Titan Fight Championships, Xtreme Fight Night, and finally World Series of Fighting (WSOF), including four knockout finishes. “Rumble” was last seen knocking out longtime veteran Mike Kyle with a thunderous left hook at WSOF 8 in January. Training at with the Blackzilians at South Florida’s Jaco Hybrid Training Center, Johnson has a golden opportunity to shock the world by defeating Davis.

And “Mr. Wonderful” might just be ripe for the picking.

Listening to Davis’ words at today’s UFC 172 media conference call, he sounds like he may just be focused a little too much on light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. If he’s looking past “Rumble,” that’s an easy way to find himself staring up at the lights.
