UFC featherweight contender Conor McGregor was impressed by the UFC 179 main event, but saw holes in the champion’s game….

Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes were involved in one of the greatest featherweight scraps in the UFC’s history. Described by Dana White as the ‘Greatest 145-pound title fight, ever’, Aldo vs Mendes 2 has become an instant classic. The back-and-forth war had many qualities that great title fights need, and we also got to see the champion face some real adversity.

It wasn’t just the fans and DW impressed with the main event at UFC 179, Conor McGregor says he respects Aldo and Mendes as ‘amazing athletes’. Check out what “The Notorious” said after UFC 179, to UFC on FOX:

“I believe [Aldo] can be hit but he showed his heart, he showed his will. He showed his frustration at times, as well. He was looking toward the ref and things of that nature. It was a great contest and I have nothing but respect for anyone who goes in there and lays it on the line. I feel if I connect, it will end, and that’s the difference between me and these people, but again, a phenomenal contest between two amazing athletes. Nothing but respect. You can’t stand like that the way [Aldo] did there. One or two clean shots from me and it is all over. I definitely saw holes in his game, of course. My confidence is sky high looking at that contest.”

The recent news that McGregor will fight Dennis Siver in January, and indeed that Cub Swanson is next in line, seems to have put a calm on McGregor’s demeanour. The lead up to UFC 179 was pretty much hi-jacked by the Irish bad boy, and there was a common opinion that McGregor would be getting the next shot at the championship belt. What a difference a week makes.

Are you buying in to Conor McGregor and his unique brand of hype, or will he fall like the rest have against Jose Aldo? He’ll have to make it past the German kickboxer in Boston, but chances are he’ll be fighting for that title in 2015…..
