After UFC 189, Matt Brown Wants Carlos Condit Or Thiago Alves

Fan favorite No. 5-ranked Matt “The Immortal” Brown has hit some rough times lately, riding a two-fight losing streak, albeit to the division’s best in champion Robbie Lawler and No. 1-ranked Johny Hendricks, after rattling off a super impressive seven-fight win streak between 2012 and 2014 that put Brown on the brink of title contention.

After coming up short in his latest bouts, Brown is now scheduled for a tune up fight so to say, as he will meet unranked Tim Means at July 11’s blockbuster UFC 189 from Las Vegas. Despite being unranked, Means is riding a four-fight win streak and will get the chance of a lifetime against Brown, while “The Immortal” will get a chance to rebound.

Although he has a fight booked, Brown still has his eyes on the top 170-pound fighters, and he may even be planning ahead after UFC 189. This weekend (May 30, 2015) No. 4-ranked Carlos Condit will return from injury to meet the rejuvenated No. 12-ranked Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 67. Brown is actually quite familiar with each man, as he had bouts fall out with both of them.

First set to meet Alves last August, the bout fell apart when “The Pitbull” was forced out due to injury. The roles then reversed when Brown was forced out of a bout with Condit at UFC on FOX 9 due to injury.

Now with all three combatants healthy, “The Immortal” is still targeting a bout with either of them. Speaking on an episode of the Great MMA Debate Podcast (Via MMAMania), Brown stated that in an ideal world, he would get passed Means in July and then square off with the winner of this weekend’s main event:

“I’m hoping I get the winner of that fight. That’s what I would like. An ideal situation, I beat (Tim) Means and I get the winner of that fight. I’m picking Condit to win.”

Although he’s picking “The Natural Born Killer” to win this weekend, Brown noted that he wasn’t counting at Alves at all:

“Saying that I’m picking Condit definitely isn’t taking anything away from Alves because he could absolutely win this fight.”

Is Brown overlooking the lesser known Means by looking ahead?
