Minotauro Nogueira: GSP won't be able to keep Anderson Silva on the ground

A guy is a good wrestler. He might stop Anderson Silva with his Wrestling skills, but he won’t keep Anderson on the ground. Our champion is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, he’s really good, he’s improving… Vitor Belfort, who’s a Carlson Gracie’s black belt, couldn’t keep him on the ground, and it’s not Georges St. Pierre the one who’ll keep him down. Anderson’s reach is bigger, Anderson’s stronger. I’d like this fight to be in Brazil. It’ll be awesome.

Mixed Martial Arts legend Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira shared his thoughts about a possible superfight in an interview to the Brazilian TATAME magazine. Jake Shields will be the man standing between Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre, looking to shock the world and become the new UFC Welterweight Champion at UFC 129. The event will take place on April 30th at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

no he didt, he said they BOTH great fighters and Anderson Silva has great reach and GSP has great technic who keeps improving quick, but the fight would be decided because of the reach advantage AS has, which is why GSP wont stand with Anderson, either way it would be an interesting match and i want to see if Silva taunts GSP like he did Maia after constantly trying to take the fight to the ground lol

I agree the fight would come down to who could impose their game plan. GSP always says he wants to strike with the grappler and grapple with the striker so one can only assume that he’ll be looking to take Silva down. The question is whether he can hold him down or not. Silva has a history of submitting wrestlers off his back but GSP also has a BJJ blackbelt. There’s so many variables to take into account it’s really quite hard to predict. Perhaps the size and reach advantage will make the ultimate difference.

“But for that fight, I expect both guys to be at their best. Georges is stronger physically and can rough him up on the inside. Anderson’s more of a technician and knows distance. Distance is the key to that fight.” direct quote from the article i suggest you read it again. maybe i’m confused by what physically stronger means if so please enlighten me

the question isnt whether or not GSP’s wrestling is good enough to hold Silva down. i mean c’mon, chael sonnen did it for 4.5 roundsand his wrestling isnt nearly as good as GSP’s. (i dont want any shit from sonnen fans cuz thats what he said. he said the only 2 people who are better than him are GSP and randy coutoure.). the question is whether or not GSP is gunna be viscious and attack him from the bell. Silva is like a machine. He gets in there and takes a minute to figure you out and after that, its all silva. Sonnen never gave Silva that minute. Hopefully GSP doesnt either

AS will take gsp apart on the ground and standing, GSP has been knocked legless before and its going to happen again with the best and most accurate striker in the world fighting him.
i dont GSP a cat in hells chance of winning this, i dont even say its a super fight, it will be a walk in the park for AS easy easy win

this fight needs to happen so fitch can be the new ww champ.

also, only 1.5 reach, but 4 inches in height. aka: longer legs. silva can use his kicks to keep gsp at bay, but will have to be wary of the takedown while throwing

This fight should be in Toronto or Montreal, it only makes since GSP will be the one moving up in weight to give him the home-field advantage. It also makes sense for the UFC financially Canada has the top 4 biggest UFC gates of all time.

i think GSP can beat Anderson. Can’t believe i’m the only one on the whole thread. I think people will be surprised at how much he holds his own in the standup. But make no mistake about it, he’ll definitely use his wrestling to win that fight. and it may be a decision. But he’ll pull it off. Go ahead and weak me. Yall will see, if the fight ever does happen.

I’m with you on this. GSP has the uncanny ability to fake you out and go for strikes you flinch at before his hand is even extended for it, then when you flinch, he pushes it forward to smack you in the face. People forget GSP’s reflexes and speed as well.

Height and reach is nothing when you can get in and out and GSP does it very well. Plus the mother****er can cover distance faster than you can blink!

GSP all day. Might not KO him, but he will win.

As much as I like both fighters, I don’t see why they should fight. For Silva, it has no value, he does not gain anything on this fight. If he fights Rashad, Jon Jones, Rampage and Rua, that would we more intersting.
For GSP, it would make more sense to fight Belfort, Mia etc first before taking on Silva.
I just don’t see that GSP can take this fight, AS is too good for GSP. GSP likes to play safe, if Silva starts hurting him, GSP quits. In GSP is not Big Nog, Fedor, Silva or Shogun, he does not like taking punishment, he plays too smart quiting right away after 2-3 hard punches and it makes sense.

I love the arrogance from some native BJJ blackbelts.

I’m a Judo/Sambo type of guy (who has recently decided to dabble in Catch-Wrestling) and even I know sometimes grappling skills are not enough to deal with a top level wrestler. And that size (like GSPs’) does matter… and sometimes doesn’t.

At 185, GSP will lose speed but probably will gain the strength advantage (especially in the clinch). Afterall, GSP is not small. He walks around almost at 190.

The way I see it – if GSP takes down Silva, he’s staying down for the majority of the round. Guys like Sonnen, Hendo and Lutter have displayed that it is possible to completely dominate and smother Anderson on the ground. The only risk for GSP in the clinch is, of course, those Muay Thai knees. But it is also possible that GSP will probably want Silva to throw those lethal knees for a takedown opportunity.

IF GSP avoids standing and trading with Silva, closes the distance, gets his arms around Ando and mixes in some fast limited strikes (instead of going for the takedown every time), then GSP will have himself another decision victory.

I personally hope it happens – I rather see Silva move up to LHW anyway and challenge Shogun Rua/Jon Jones.

Corey first off, you can never say “Fighter A would never beat Fighter B in a fight… i mean ever” when talking about top level athletes and not sound like you still don’t understand the sport. Anything can happen in this sport, especially in fights involving 2 top of the heap athletes shuch as Belfort and ST-Pierre. it can be very unlikely that a particular situation could happen, but its never impossible. Even Demain Maia gets tapped out, even Lyoto Machida gets knocked out. Anything can happen. plus its very likely that GSP could beat Vitor Belfort, even though Vitor was Heavyweight Champion and GSP’s Welterweight Champion. GSP has out-grappled every fighter that he has come across, and many of these guys are top of the heap grapplers. Vitor Belfort has been out-grappled on many occasions. yes grappling is just one aspect of the sport. i am just showing how possible it is for GSP to win that fight you hypothesized.

Not a big AS fan, not a big GSP fan, but im telling you you can predict GSP you can say hes boring, but hell look for a weakness. and through the Cheal sonnen (sorry if mispelled) that anderson can be taken to the ground and held down. is it flashy and amazing? nope not the lease amount, but you know what. thats part of the game. you wrestle the boxer and box the wreastler. GSP in my mine can out wreastle and hold down AS. thats my opinion. too many people is just scared of anderson silva that they wont get that close. so anderson silva just nit picks at em till they get caught by his amazing percision. idk to me GSP v AS would be a great fight, but if they both play it they way they need to. GSP comes out with the decision

I see where your going with that, and AS has good many upsides, including the heavier wieghts. But almost got to think as GSP as a mini AS. Both amazing strikers, id give that to AS but with wrestling id give that that to GSP and GSP to me has shown he can keep people on the ground and smother him. AS feels unconfertable with that as seen in Cheal Sonnen fight. Itll be a interesting fight. see who uses which stratagy to overcome their opponet. its finny seeing these comments saying AS WILL KILL GSP!!! because if AS will win. it was a hard fought fight

why do people argue with the same thing?
Anderson Silva would beat GSP if they ever fight in MMA!

there is a reason for weigh classes!
20-30lbs will make a difference with fighters with world class skills
not to mention the reach and height

is like arguing if Frankie Edgar would beat GSP, or if Silva would beat Shogun.

every Champion in each division will beat the Champion below him
thats why there are weight classes so fighters can fight in fair fights with others with similar size, weight and height. period.

Me too, Shogun just recently stated (in a post-fight conference) that if he was offered the fight – he’d take it.

Don’t know if there’s bad blood between the two (since Shogun seems to get along with everybody and appears to be very down to earth and humble) but I know his mentor [Wanderlei] wants to put Silva’s head on a pike.

Other than personal history, this match up is fantastic and a dream come true for any MMA fan. I’m drooling at the thought of it.

World Class Striker vs World Class Striker
BJJ black belt vs. BJJ black belt

Rua’s ground game might be a notch above Silva’s though… but this fight is still too close to call, in my opinion.

“Vitor Belfort, who’s a Carlson Gracie’s black belt, couldn’t keep him on the ground”

All respects to Nog, but when Belfort had the opportunity to contrtol Silva on the ground, he opted for the riskier strike rather than establishing top control, giving Silva the chance to pop up like a jack-in-the-box. That one brief takedown moment was all we saw of Silva’s escape technique–hardly a real test. Besides, I am not certain that Belfort wanted a ground game at that point, he didn’t seem to want to get into Silva’s guard.

In addition, a wrestler with a black belt in BJJ is better suited to keep Silva on the ground than a pure BJJ fighter. BJJ fighters have discovered to their chagrin that wrestlers who know how to defend BJJ submissions have made the traditionally dangerous BJJ guard a suicide mission.

A classic battle between BJJ and BJJ/American wrestling was at UFC 100 between Paulo Thiago and John Fitch. BJJ black belt Thiago tried multiple submissions, and in the end, was worn out, flattened out, and caught in a rear naked choke, only to be saved by the bell.

let me get this right… gsp who has put down, n held down bj penn, who yes is smaller, but is also way better bjj artist than anderson silva, also never even came close to getting sub’d or even reversed on the ground.. nogueira is really saying that anderson’s bjj is good enough to deal with gsp on the ground??? is he fcking nuts? chael owned anderson on the ground until the sub (and that will NOT happen to GSP im positive of it) .. so why is he so full of crap? i know you have to say good things bout your teammates etc, but when does saying crazy shit become wrong… only way anderson can win is on the feet, and to be honest, the reach is nothing, gsp is faster in my opinion.. sure anderson can make forrest griffin look slow but so can my grandma… hes gonna need to pull out a front kick or spinning elbow outta nowhere to win this fight… cause if gsp is walkin around at 205 or so, and anderson is 220 or so, i still believe gsp is stronger than anderson physically.. and he will prove it, GOD i cannot wait to see this , FINALLY someone i actually believe can beat Silva rather than just the ufc prefight hype saying they can… although, i thought that for chael and he came close… but i mean the maia, belfort, cote lineup of guys.. sorry but they were not real contenders… just all that was available at the time..
