"MMA is a barbaric and repulsive sport" say Australian reporters

Australian Fox Sports’ “The Back Page” panel described Mixed Martial Arts as a “barbaric and repulsive sport”, discussing it’s mainstream future. UFC 110: Nogueira vs Velasquez event received some different remarks from the local conservative press, despite selling out the huge Acer Arena in Sydney.

Ultimate Fighting Championship’s next international journey will be to Abu Dhabi, with a stacked UFC 112: Invincible card headlined by the Middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Demian Maia.

They’re just ignorant. A little scalp wound is nothing. They just bleed a lot, every kid has had them.

Do they cry about boxing? Boxing is far more brutal and far more damaging to the fighters. Has there ever been a boxing match ended without a single strike landed?

Its natural for some people’s first reaction to a bloody fight to be negative. with a little more exposure they’ll come around. Its like the first time I watched a womens MMA fight. round 1: “this is wrong and hard to watch” round 2: “this is still wrong, but I can’t stop watching” round 3: “this is awesome!”

The panel can talk about how much they think MMA is repulsive and barbaric, but the most important part of that vid is that the Acer arena sold out in four hours. When the UFC returns to Australia it will sell out whatever arena they decide to hold the event in.

Thats why they didnt have the elbows in pride, they cut sharp. UFC 110 was really bloody and they’re not all like that, accidental headbutt is pretty rare too. When i first saw the ufc in 97 i thought it was just barbaric too but then understood the different techniques involved and changed my mind with pride years later. Knowledge is the key.

It’s always funny when old guys talk about how boxing is ok but that MMA is barbaric. I guess getting hit in the head a million times in 12 rounds is not barbaric at all. And not “extreme” either.

Early tournament style UFC was gross IMO. When it was bare-knuckle no-holds-barred brutality with no weight classes… I was not a fan at all.

It is a superior sport in every single way today. More civilized, more technical, more skilled, more athletic… It’s a better sport with the regulation, including the few things that were allowed in Pride that are not allowed now. Soccer kicks are too dangerous IMO.

If someone dies in the octagon, it will set the sport back a decade.

Soccer and boxing are much more violent then MMA. When I used to play soccer I hurt badly both knees and my right anckle as well. Been doing jiu jitsu for 6 years and had only small injuries.

I dont agree. There was some huge skills at UFC 1 with Royce gracie for example and the fight between Nog and bob sapp is a classic even with the insane weight difference. Nog submitted him and proved the power of BJJ. These were important fights that shudnt be called just barbaric and brutal.
Dont get me wrong, today rules are good and make the sport mainstream but i dont think it was just a stupid version of mma. Its not just black and white.

“apparently there is a lot of skill”?!! That bitch needs to step into a cage and get educated and so do the rest of this panel.
They’re all just ignorant boxing purists that cant understand that MMA is the most entertaining and competitive sport today.
People need to be educated to understand it, beginning with teaching them the sports real name which Mixed Martial Arts not Ultimate Fighting.

if your looking for bias here. its pretty damn obvious. there is no one knowledgeable about the sport or someone there to represent it. the panel is full of avid boxing fans. obviously they are going to say hey come watch boxing mma is barbaric. The panel is full of people in the age group of 40s who are being very recently exposed to the sport.

honestly, if someone knowledgeable was there, they can simply point out that taking 1 or 2 extra punches on the ground knocked down is a lot better than taking a bunch of punches getting knocked down, getting back and taking a bunch of more punches.

I would rather have a few cuts to stitch, clean up, broken bones, than to have some heavy glove bang into my head until I was punch drunk.

How many boxers have had their lives shortened due to pugilistic dementia?

UFC does it right. There is a reason they do business the way they do.

The Back Page on FOX is a minor sports show in Australia. This opinion is not representative of the general Australian train of thought – i mean the show sold out in 4 hours…

In Australia Fox is a pay tv channel, while currently the UFC screens on a rival free-to-air channel, maybe the comments have something to do with that…

Fox also screen K1 kickboxing so its a bit stupid to comment that way about mma.

atleast 5 or ten die in boxing. A year
MMA might be more brutal and gory but who frigin cares, its entertaining and exciting and safer. No one has died yet in MMA in the 30+ years it has been around. But Dana White says Hershal Walker could be the 1st death, but he is just ignerant.

The world record boxing match was 48 rounds, 96 mins of getting punched in the face is brutall. I’m surprized no one died during that fight.
But 120 rounds of couse someone might die
