Demian Maia confirmed as Vitor Belfort’s replacement

With Vitor Belfort having to pull out of UFC 112 due to a shoulder injury, the UFC were starting to sweat on a replacement. Speculation even loomed that a match with current UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva may even be pulled from UFC 112 altogether, but it was finally decided that Demian Maia will be replacing Belfort and the fight will still be for the Middleweight belt. UFC President Dana White confirmed the news:

“It’s always tough when a top fighter like Vitor Belfort has to pull out of a big title fight, but we have found a high quality replacement. Top contender Chael Sonnen was not available due to injuries sustained in his fight with Nate Marquardt, so top-six middleweight Demian Maia will step in to fight for the title.”

“Maia is an Abu Dhabi grappling champion, a five-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion, and he is 12-1 in MMA and coming off a win over Dan Miller at UFC 109. Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia will be a matchup between MMA’s best striker and MMA’s best grappler.”

UFC Lightweight Title fight between BJ “The Prodigy” Penn and Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will be a co-main event of the evening. UFC 112 will take place on April 10, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

I just think its sad that Silva manages to escape a final test before leaving MMA, this is the only contender Silva isn’t worried about fighting, I don’t see that Silva would want to ever defend his title again. The next 3 fights would all be high risk for him.

it’s not about bending the maia. bend yourself.

of course he will lose. the question is how hard and by how much and how much more so would sonnen lose by had he not been saved by a vagina on his forehead.

meh.. wut? the japanese have taken adcc serious from the start. but we retarded americans didn’t take it seriously until the last 3-5 years. if you even try to bring up josh your nuts must be removed just like his were when the HGH overwhelmed his testicles/brainstem.

Maia doesn’t have the stand up skills to try to make this a stand up fight and he doesn’t have the strength or ability to take Silva down. I feel this is going to be a stand-up technical fight for Silva. He will dictate the stand up and win with a decision or a knock-out. I love seeing “The Spider” pick apart oppentents throughout a 5 round fight but i know the average fan doesn’t like these types of fights: Silva vs. Cote and Silva vs. Thales Leites.

Maia fought on the same card as Sonnen. Yes, I know Sonnen sustained a cut and the doctors said he had a 30 day no fight order. But, The Silva fight would be more than 30 days away so it is possible
    for Sonnen to fight.

ok who would he fight? If you want to be at the top you fight in the UFC. But if you want to fight washed up fighters, who use to be good then fight in strikeforce!
