Dana White: UFC 146 title fight will happen no matter what

On Thursday, Dana White announced that the Heavyweight title fight will take place at UFC 146 on May 26, 2012, regardless of Alistair Overeem‘s participation. Junior dos Santos, as expected, will defend his belt against an unnamed opponent. It will be entirely in the hands of the Nevada State Athletic Commission to decide if Overeem will be able to fight, but at this point, his licensing status is up in the air. Overeem has been oft-criticized for his possible usage of performance-enhancing drugs, but has not failed any specific drug test up until the March 27 sample in question.

Overeem will have his b-sample tested for clarification, however, it appears that many of Dana White’s fears concerning the former Strikeforce champion have been confirmed. Keith Kizer of the NSAC has explained this next step in the testing and licensing process, and also that Overeem had tested abnormally high for T/E levels, at a ratio of 14:1 to that of a normal human male.

Much has been made concerning this last week’s developments, but a title contender has not been named to replace Overeem. Perhaps the UFC is awaiting the concrete results of the second test and subsequent hearing. With rumors swirling around that Frank Mir will have another shot at the belt, speculation runs rampant as other possible contenders like Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt await the announcement. Dos Santos has made it clear that he is not a proponent of steroids or any performance-enhancing drugs, and has become champion naturally. We will wait and see who will be the next challenger for his UFC Heavyweight title. – Credit: msnbc.com

If they did they wouldn’t be testing for steroids.

FRANK Mir will be fighting for the title…

There is no way Hunt will be offered a shot before the others…He needs a few more wins.

Cain velasquez would be just as interesting

Werdum or Hunt will replace Mir against Velasquez if you ask me. And JDS will fight Mir, knocking him out in the 1rst. Velasquez will beat either Werdum or Hunt, then Alistair will fight Velasquez and lose. Then we will see Velasquez vs JDS rematch.

ALWAYS KNEW THE REEM WAS ON ROIDS JUST A MATTER OF TIME, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE LAST INCIDENT BEFORE THE BROCK FIGHT…GUESS WE’LL GET TO SEE REEM VS FEDOR AFTER ALL…..HEY, I DONT THINK THEY TEST THEIR FIGHTERS SO GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO ROIN THE FCK UP, DESTROY UR OPPONENTS AND CREDIT UR DAMN “HORSE MEAT”.

A fearless Hendo has also expressed interest in the fight…Just wanted to throw that out…

1- Mir is most deserving of the title shot, given his winning streak and the impressive nature of these wins.
2- Cain would offer the most interesting and intriguing match-up, but the devastating knockout would disqualify him.
3- Mark Hunt isn’t in title contention yet despite his good wins…One or 2 wins will get him there…
4- The Reem: the hope that Overeem will still fight is becoming slimmer. More likely, he’ll have to serve his one-year suspension penalty and then return to reclaim the crown…

why hasn’t Reem come out and made a statement yet and when are the results for the B-sample suppose to be out so we know what’s gonna happen. i’m sure Frank and Cain would want to know already too since its gonna be them who most likely will have a new opponent with only less then 2 months notice of their possible new opponent and if its for the title or not

I don’t see Hunt being any where near the mix! He is a legend of MMA; but he is no Randy Couture. I don’t think he has near enough pull to get a title shot on his name alone.

I’d say you hit the nail on the head with Werdum. He’s been looking impressive with his standup lately; most recent and notably his win against Big Country, and his decision loss to the Reem
Plus he was KO’d by JDS on his last stint in the UFC, when he didn’t know who JDS was. When no one knew who JDS was!
He can’t stand and trade with JDS like last time. But It would be interesting to see who had improved more since the first meeting.

I dont think Overeem will be suspended, he doesnt even have his license in the first place.

right now, he just needs to test negative and he will be granted his license to fight. But now he will forever have an asterisk by his name.
