Bellator 39 Results: Eddie Alvarez outboxes Pat Curran, retains Lighweight Title

Bellator 39 delivered an exciting night of fights from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.  Eddie Alvarez successfully defended his Lightweight title, outboxing Pat Curran in the card’s headlining bout en-route to a lopsided unanimous decision victory, while  Rick Hawn picked up a close split decision over former Welterweight champ Lyman Good in the co-main event.  Patricky Freire put on an impressive display, landing a vicious flying knee that left veteran Toby Imada out on his feet, as did former UFC fighter Ben Saunders, who put on a Muay Thai clinic, defeating Matt Lee via doctor stoppage.

Main Card Results:

Eddie Alvarez def. Pat Curran via unanimous decision (49-46, 50-45, 50-45)

Rick Hawn def. Lyman Good via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

Patricky Freire def. Toby Imada via KO (Flying Knee and Punches) at 2:53 of round 1

Lowkick Staff, Rick Hawn deserves a fan profile. The man is now 11-0, and he just beat the former champ. Just saying…

As for Alvarez, I don’t think he helped his stock BUT then again this Curran fellow could be a future world champion.

great night of fights eddie looked good but if he really wants to be considered the number 1 lightweight in the world he needs to fight top 5 guys consistently. in a couple years patt curran may well be top 5 be hes isnt even top 20 now

Alvarez made Curran look like a child, he has RIDICOLOUS boxing. Imo Alvarez is the number one lightweight

Did he knock him out? Pass his guard? He could barely take him down.

    Put the cool aid down.

i dont know about #1 LW but for sure Top 5, Alvarez reminded me a lot of frankie edgar last night. Maybe all the training they’ve been doing together is paying off..

Did curan land any shots? Did curan threaten alvarez at any point in a 25min fight? Did you watch the same fight? That was a fcking display !
Now people start calling curan a future champion? People are out of their minds, that guy had no business being in there with eddie.

RIght, cause Curren is no where near the talent as your boy. My point exactly. If Alverez is so great, why couldn’t he finish, knock down, pass this guy!

Pat Curran is still a kid at 23, and he dominated Roger Huerta and fought a top 5 fighter in Alvarez for 25 minutes. If that doesn’t scream out potential then I don’t know what does.

Like MereDictum stated, did Alvarez knock him out? Did even pass his guard? No. And Alvarez considers himself to the #1 LW in the world? Not with that performace last night.

ok so he didnt finish him, how is anybody gonna critizice Alvarez for last nights performance? I thought he dominated him from the first to the last minute, showcasing amazing striking – I doubt maynard or edgar would have finished curran that night.
I dont know any 155er that has better striking than alvarez and he has
    wrestling and submissions too!

No one’s saying your boy didn’t win.

He’s not living up to his own hype is all I’m saying.

This was my first full live Bellator event I have watched an I was not disapointed!
Although I was surprised that Eddie Alvarez just looked like he was not interested in finishing the fight – body shots in the 5th? Unless you are someone like Bas Rutten you aren’t going to finish a fight with a body shot, they are used for winding, exhausting and slowing down your opponent. His body shots looked and sounded great but he should’ve realised Curran wasn’t going to engage body shots or not, he should’ve been swinging for the head in the fifth (if he wants to be talked about as top 3 LWs)

Exactly, I’m not saying Alvarez didn’t win but when claiming to be the #1 fighter in your division and you’re not in the UFC (or at least in a legitimate contending organization) then you better back up your own words and finish a 23 year old (who didn’t even have a wikipedia page two months ago).
